Weekend Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is a local nonprofit organization that seeks to provide nutritious meals and other nutrition services to men and women who are elderly, homebound, disabled, frail or at risk. These services significantly improve the quality of life and health of these individuals, and postpone early institutionalization. The Meals on Wheels weekend program picks up where the federally funded weekday program stops. Currently, there are about 170 elderly shut-ins in our area who depend on the weekend volunteers of MOW to provide food for them on Saturdays and Sundays. PC3 is seeking to pick up the fourth Sunday of every month to gather, prepare and deliver meals to the 170 elderly in need. To accomplish this we need about 30 willing individuals, whose commitments would require approximately three hours every fourth Sunday of every month, either to cook/prepare or to deliver. Five to 10 volunteers are needed to cook from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., while 18 people—or groups of people—are needed to deliver the packaged meals from approximately 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. along 18 different meal-delivery routes. The routes are set, with very detailed directions and instructions on delivering. If this is something you are interested in, please e-mail Richie Marshall.

Habitat for Humanity

Overflow, PC3's ministry for college students and 20-somethings, assists our local chapter of Habitat for Humanity every third Saturday of each month. The work takes place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and lunch is included. Habitat is a Christian housing ministry working to assist needy families in the Cape Fear region toward the purchase of Habitat homes, all built by community volunteers as well as the future homeowners themselves. Participation with Habitat is a great way to meet new people from our church, serve together and make a difference in the community! If you are interested in joining Overflow in its efforts with Habitat, please email missions.

Saturday Meals

On the first and third Saturdays of each month, PC3 teams prepare and serve a hot lunch meal to those in need. Through this ministry, many people have received encouragement and have witnessed the love of Christ. Areas of service in this mission include shopping for food/supplies, meal preparation, transportation, serving, visiting with guests, and clean-up. For more information, e-mail missions at PC3.

Port City Mentor Program

Through the Port City Mentor Program, you can make a significant difference in the life of a child. The purpose of this program is to help improve the overall well-being of at-risk elementary school students by connecting them with caring and dependable adults on a regular basis. As a mentor, you will have the extraordinary opportunity to inspire these children in their strengths, encourage them in their weaknesses and simply be a consistent positive presence in their lives. Your commitment requires that you simply visit with your assigned child during their regularly scheduled school lunch period for about 30 minutes once a week. If you have additional questions about this program, or if you are interested in becoming a mentor, please e-mail missions at PC3 and provide us with your name and phone numbers.

Community Boys And Girls Club

The Community Boys and Girls Club (CBGC) of Wilmington is positively influencing the youth in this community. You can participate in the work of this organization and make a lasting impact on lives by spending time with the children or aiding the facility itself. The kids served at the CBGC develop their mind, body, soul and potential through various activities in education, health, sports, the arts, career training, and character development. Services are available through the club that will help this future generation with virtually every facet of their lives, expanding upon what is already being taught, mentored or modeled at the school or home environment. Ways that you can serve the kids include tutoring, homework assistance, reading to them, helping in the computer lab, developing a soccer or other sports team or league, overseeing games, assisting on outings/field trips or just being a presence among the kids – the club is open to ideas you might have. Consistency is important; it is important that you schedule a regular time to serve, and it is best if you can commit to a period of at least several months.
