The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been ravaged by war and its aftermaths. Despite its wealth of natural resources, it is one of the most impoverished nations in the world.
In 2004, Port City began supporting efforts of a group of churches in DRC: Church of the Holy Spirit. The works included church plants, short-term pastoral training, construction of a primary school for underprivileged children, and establishment of two feeding centers for orphaned and malnourished children.
In 2006 our involvement deepened. We began working directly with one of the feeding centers and providing medical care for children at both centers. Two young women from Port City served among the congregants of CHS for almost a year. Their ministries included working with the youth, assisting at the feeding centers, serving in a hospital that ministers to women who are victims of rape and other brutal crimes, helping some of the women establish vocations, and ministering to prisoners – some of whom were the ones committing these brutal crimes against the women and some who had been child soldiers. Their journey can be viewed in our online video project: Congocast
Later Port City helped begin construction of a community center, where it is hoped the churches can one day conduct literacy, vocational, and other kinds of training. Our most recent effort alongside the Church of the Holy Spirit has been discipleship training of the youth leaders. Through Food for the Hungry International, Port City has begun supporting an agriculture project that we hope will help one of the CHS communities become self-sustaining.
Through LifeWind International, Port City has been able to arrange for Community Health Evangelism training to a group of men and women leaders in the churches. We have hope that these leaders will become initiators of holistic movements in their communities.

We are encouraged by the commitment to God we see in the people of CHS, and we are excited to see what God will do through them.

Please pray for:
- The people of DRC – for their safety and for continued improvements in their living conditions. Pray that they will be sustained and their hope increased through personal relationships with Christ. Pray they will come to a greater understanding of their identity in Christ, and living their lives in His image.
- The churches and their pastors – that God will strengthen them in the understanding of His Word and renew their joy, despite the difficult circumstances of living they encounter.
- The victims of these brutal crimes, especially for the women requiring extensive surgeries. For both physical and emotional healing. For the doctors and staff of Panzi Hospital who perform many of these surgeries and nurse the women back to health.
- For a stronger government and economic growth.
- The short-term teams that travel to this area.
- God to raise up long-term workers for this field.
- Other prayer requests for this country and its people can be found in Operation World.
